Tote Bag Sizes & Dimensions: A Wholesale Size Chart
Wholesale tote bag sizes in cm and inches — standard canvas tote dimensions, gusset depths, handle/strap lengths, logo print areas and MOQ for custom orders.
Tote bag sizes are quoted in centimetres as width × height, plus gusset depth when the bag has one. Most sizing problems come from mixing up flat and gusseted measurements, or picking a bag by its panel width without checking the handle drop or the printable area for a logo. This guide gives a full tote bag size chart in cm and inches, maps each standard size to its real-world use (promotions, bookstores, boutiques, grocery and heavy loads), explains handle and strap lengths, and lists the exact in-stock size grids we produce — with artwork sizes, MOQ and lead times for custom orders.
How tote bag dimensions are measured
Lay the empty tote flat and measure across the panel (width), from the bottom edge to the top opening (height), and — only on gusseted bags — across the folded side panel (depth). Width and height are written in that order; depth is the third number. A flat 30 × 35 cm bag has no usable thickness beyond what the fabric folds give, while a 30 × 35 × 10 cm bag holds a genuine 10 cm-deep box standing up, so the two are not interchangeable even though the first two numbers match.
- Width (W) × height (H) for flat bags; W × H × depth (D) for gusseted bags.
- Seam allowance removes about 1 cm from each panel compared to the cut fabric.
- Soft flat bags wrap around items 3–5 cm thicker than the panel; rigid boxes need an exact dimensional match.
- Tolerance on stitched canvas is typically ±1 cm, slightly more after washing.
The 1–2 cm clearance rule
For boxed or rigid contents choose a bag at least 1–2 cm larger on each dimension; for soft goods the nominal size can match the product because the canvas flexes. Gusseted bags are sized to the product's depth plus 1 cm.

Which tote size for which use
| Use case | Recommended size | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Trade-show / event giveaway | 30 × 35 or 33 × 38 cm | Highest reorder ratio; 8–10 oz keeps unit cost down |
| A4 documents / folders | 30 × 35 cm minimum | A4 is 21 × 29.7 cm; 33 × 38 if adding a sleeve or binder |
| Bookstore / catalogue | 35 × 40 cm | Hardbacks and thick catalogues need the extra height |
| Boutique retail bag | 38 × 42 cm or gusseted | Gusset of 10–12 cm fits shoe and garment boxes |
| A3 pads / artwork | 40 × 45 cm | A3 is 29.7 × 42 cm; load flat, no gusset needed |
| Grocery / heavy loads | 40 × 50 cm, 12 oz | Heavier fabric plus wider stitching at the handles |
| Lunch / food / multi-item | Gusset 10–15 cm | Depth stops contents tipping and hides the base |
Tote handle and strap lengths
Handle length is the second number buyers forget to specify. It is measured as the drop — the distance from the top of the bag panel to the inside top of the handle when the bag is held. Drop decides whether the bag is hand/elbow carry, shoulder carry or crossbody, and it is independent of the panel size, so it must be confirmed separately in your spec.
| Carry style | Handle drop | Typical total strap* |
|---|---|---|
| Hand / elbow (short handles) | 18–22 cm (7–9 in) | 50–60 cm |
| Shoulder (standard tote) | 25–30 cm (10–12 in) | 65–75 cm |
| Over-the-shoulder with winter coat | 30–35 cm (12–14 in) | 75–85 cm |
| Crossbody / long strap | 50–60 cm (20–24 in) | 110–125 cm |
*Total strap length is roughly twice the drop plus the distance between the attachment points on the panel. Short handles are sewn as a pair on the front and back panels; long and crossbody straps are usually one continuous strip. Ribbon and contrast-fabric straps follow the same drops and are common on gift-focused lines.
In-stock size grids (with MOQ)
These are the exact size grids of our canvas lines. Storefront MOQ starts at 50 pieces for blank and printed standard sizes; pricing is tiered by quantity, fabric weight and decoration, so the current tier price is shown on each product page and confirmed in your quote rather than fixed in a guide.

Logo size and print area by tote size
Artwork must fit inside a safe print area centred on the panel — roughly 10 cm smaller than the panel on each dimension to clear seams, hems and handle attachments. Centred one-colour screen print is the default; embroidery uses a slightly smaller area to keep the design from puckering.
| Bag panel | Max. screen print area | Max. embroidery area |
|---|---|---|
| 25 × 30 cm | 15 × 18 cm | 10 × 10 cm |
| 30 × 35 cm | 20 × 22 cm | 12 × 12 cm |
| 33 × 38 cm | 22 × 25 cm | 14 × 14 cm |
| 35 × 40 cm | 25 × 28 cm | 15 × 15 cm |
| 40 × 45 / 40 × 50 cm | 30 × 32 cm | 18 × 18 cm |
Decoration method is chosen alongside size: screen print for bold solid logos, heat transfer for full-colour and small-run artwork, and embroidery for premium headwear-style branding. Full method and MOQ detail is covered in our custom-logo tote guide; the key sizing point is that the artwork is scaled to the panel before plates or digitising are made, so send the bag size and artwork together.
Fabric weight, packing and freight
Size and fabric weight together decide carton weight and freight. Common canvas runs 8 oz for economy promotions, 10 oz as the all-purpose standard and 12 oz for bags meant to be washed and reused; the full oz-to-GSM comparison is in our canvas weight guide. Totes ship flat and nest tightly: a standard 60 × 40 × 40 cm export carton holds roughly 200–250 of the 30 × 35 cm 8 oz bags but only 100–120 of the 40 × 50 cm 12 oz size. Gusseted bags take proportionally more room because the folded sides cannot nest.
- Blank standard sizes: MOQ from 50 pieces, sampling 5–7 days.
- Custom one-colour print: MOQ from 50 pieces on standard panels; extra colours add per-colour setup.
- Custom non-standard sizes: new cutting form, quoted per dieline, sampling about 7–10 days.
- Bulk lead time runs about 15–25 days depending on quantity and decoration; rush schedules are quoted case by case.

Frequently asked questions
What is the standard tote bag size?
The standard promotional tote is about 33 × 38 cm (13 × 15 in). It fits A4 documents with room for a folder and is the most-reordered size worldwide. Slightly smaller 30 × 35 cm (12 × 14 in) is common for budget event giveaways.
How are tote bag dimensions written?
Width × height in cm for flat bags, with gusset depth as a third number (W × H × D) when the bag has a folded side panel. Measure on the bag laid flat; seam allowance removes about 1 cm from each panel versus the cut fabric.
What size tote bag fits A4 paper?
A4 is 21 × 29.7 cm, so a 30 × 35 cm tote fits it comfortably. Choose 33 × 38 cm if the paperwork goes in a binder, sleeve or folder with thicker edges.
What size tote bag fits A3 paper?
A3 is 29.7 × 42 cm, so a 40 × 45 cm tote carries it flat. Smaller panels curl the paper, and a gusset is not needed unless other items ride alongside.
What is a gusset and do I need one?
A gusset is a folded side or bottom panel that gives the bag real depth — commonly 7, 10, 12 or 15 cm. You need one for boxed, catering or stacked items; flat bags are enough and cheaper for documents, books and soft goods.
What is the standard handle drop for a tote?
Shoulder-carry totes use a 25–30 cm (10–12 in) handle drop. Short hand/elbow handles run 18–22 cm, and long crossbody straps run about 50–60 cm of drop.
How big should a logo be on a tote bag?
Keep the design inside a safe print area roughly 10 cm smaller than the panel on each dimension. For a standard 33 × 38 cm tote that is about 22 × 25 cm for screen print; embroidery uses a smaller area to avoid puckering.
What size is a 13 × 15 inch tote bag in cm?
Thirteen by fifteen inches converts to about 33 × 38 cm — the standard promotional tote size. Factory dimensions are rounded to whole centimetres, so listed cm and inch figures are nominal equivalents rather than exact conversions.
What is the difference between flat and gusseted measurements?
A flat 30 × 35 cm bag has only the thickness the fabric folds give, while a 30 × 35 × 10 cm bag holds a genuine 10 cm-deep box. The first two numbers match, but only the gusseted version carries rigid depth without bulging at the seams.
Can I order custom non-standard tote dimensions and what is the MOQ?
Yes. Custom sizes need a new cutting form and are quoted per dieline with sampling around 7–10 days; MOQ starts at 50 pieces for printed standard panels. Non-standard cuts may carry a slightly higher MOQ to cover the cutting setup, which is quoted up front.
