Custom Paper Bags for Boutiques: MOQ, Sizes and Print Options
Custom paper bags for boutiques explained — standard sizes in cm, MOQ for printed bags, paper weights, handle and print options, and what to send for a fast quote.
For a boutique, the paper bag is walking advertising — customers carry your logo down the street for free. But the first custom order raises three practical questions: which size fits the products, how many bags you have to commit to, and which print options are worth paying for. This guide answers all three with a standard boutique size chart, realistic MOQ ranges for printed bags, and a plain-English rundown of paper weights, handles and finishes, so you can brief a supplier in one message.
Standard boutique paper bag sizes
Paper bag sizes are quoted as width × height × gusset (side depth), in centimetres. The gusset is what lets the bag stand open and hold boxed or bulky items — a bag without enough gusset collapses around anything thicker than a T-shirt. Most boutique assortments are covered by four size bands, which map closely to the stock grids we keep in production:
| Band | Typical sizes (W × H × D, cm) | What fits |
|---|---|---|
| Small | 15 × 20 × 6 / 16 × 22 × 8 | Jewelry, cosmetics, small accessories, gift cards |
| Medium | 20 × 28 × 10 / 22 × 26 × 10 / 25 × 32 × 13 | Folded apparel, books, candle jars, gift sets |
| Large | 30 × 40 × 10 / 35 × 26 × 13 / 40 × 28 × 12 | Knitwear, shoeboxes, multiple items |
| Extra large | 43 × 32 × 13 / 48 × 35 × 14 | Outerwear, boxed sets, event merchandise |

Size to the biggest product, not the average
Pick the size band that fits your largest regular seller, then check that smaller items still look intentional in it — tissue paper or a branded box inside fills the gap. Two sizes cover most boutiques better than four.
Browse stock paper bag sizesMOQ: how many bags do you actually have to order?
MOQ for paper bags is driven by printing, not by the bag itself. A plain stock bag can ship in very small quantities because it is already on the shelf; the MOQ appears the moment your logo goes on it, because the print run has to cover plate or screen setup, make-ready waste and machine calibration. As a realistic guide:
- Stock formats, unprinted or with simple branding: from around 50 pieces — the low-risk way to test a size before committing.
- Custom printed bags (full-colour or foil logo): typically 100–500 pieces, with the exact figure set by bag size and finish — larger bags and specialty finishes push the MOQ up.
- Fully custom constructions (custom size, specialty paper, ribbon handles): usually quoted from the higher end of that range, because the dieline and materials are made for your order.
- Mixed sizes in one order: sizes from the same construction and print can usually share a run, so a small-plus-medium assortment does not double the MOQ.
If a supplier quotes you 1,000+ pieces for a first boutique order, ask whether a stock format with your print would do the same job — it often does, at a fraction of the commitment.
Paper weight: what GSM means for a boutique bag
Boutique carry bags are normally made from white card in the 210–300 gsm range — stiff enough to stand open, fold cleanly at the top and carry a few kilograms with a reinforced handle. Natural kraft runs lighter, roughly 120–250 gsm, and suits an eco or artisan positioning. Going up in board weight improves both the hand feel and the handle security, and usually matters more to perceived quality than any print effect.

Our GSM guide explains what the numbers mean for bags, boxes and cards — and when GSM is the wrong thing to specify.

| Option | Look | Best for | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full-colour print (CMYK) | Any artwork, gradients, photography | Full-bleed branded designs | Standard choice on white card |
| Foil stamping | Metallic gold, silver or coloured logo | Luxury and gift positioning | Crisp on logos and type; pairs with matte lamination |
| Spot UV | Glossy highlights on a matte bag | Subtle premium accents | Best on dark or matte-laminated stock |
| Embossing / debossing | Raised or pressed logo | Understated branding | Works with or without foil |
| Matte / gloss lamination | Sealed, scuff-resistant surface | Any printed bag | Matte reads premium; gloss makes colours pop |
| Specialty papers | Pearl, textured or coloured stock | Distinctive shelf presence | Higher MOQ; our seamless pearl line is built for this |
Handles: the detail customers actually hold
Handle choice changes both comfort and positioning. Twisted paper cord is the everyday retail default, flat paper rope is the boutique upgrade that spreads the load across the palm, die-cut slots are the minimalist low-cost option for light items, and ribbon or cotton cord turns the bag into gift packaging. Whatever the style, an internal reinforcing patch under the top fold is what actually carries the weight — specify it for anything heavier than a couple of kilograms.

We broke down look, comfort, load and cost for all three common handle types — plus reinforcement options — in a separate guide.

A complete boutique brief fits in five lines: the size (or the product that must fit inside), quantity per size, paper and colour, print or finish options, and your logo artwork in vector format. With that, a serious factory can quote within about 24 hours. White samples and a printed proof on your chosen construction typically take 5–7 days — always approve a physical sample before bulk production, because board stiffness and print colour read very differently in the hand than on screen.
No dieline or print-ready file yet? That is normal for a first order — for stock formats we place your logo on our existing template and send you the positioned proof. If you do work with a designer, our dieline explainer covers cut lines, bleed and safe zones so the artwork comes back right the first time.
Sending artwork
Vector files (AI, PDF, SVG) print cleanest. If your logo only exists as a PNG, send the largest version you have — we will tell you honestly whether it will hold up at bag size.

Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum order for custom printed paper bags?
Custom printed paper bags typically start at 100–500 pieces depending on size and finish, while unprinted stock formats start around 50 pieces. Mixed sizes from the same construction can usually share one print run, so an assortment does not multiply the MOQ.
What size paper bag does a boutique need?
Most boutiques are covered by two sizes: a medium bag around 22 × 26 × 10 cm for everyday purchases and a large bag around 30 × 40 × 10 cm for knitwear, shoeboxes and multi-item sales. Size to your largest regular product and let tissue paper fill the gap for smaller items.
How much do custom paper bags cost?
Unit price depends on size, board weight, print coverage, finish and quantity — larger orders unlock lower unit prices. Send your size, quantity and artwork and we quote within about 24 hours, with samples before you commit to bulk.
Can I get a sample with my logo before ordering?
Yes. A printed proof on your chosen construction typically takes 5–7 days alongside plain white samples. Always approve a physical sample first — board stiffness, handle comfort and print colour can only be judged in the hand.
Which paper and handle should a boutique choose?
A 210–300 gsm white card with a flat paper-rope handle is the standard boutique specification: stiff enough to stand open, comfortable to carry and clean to print on. Choose kraft for an eco positioning, foil or specialty paper for a luxury line, and always add a reinforcing patch for heavier items.
